Best structural support for Monoslope (Shed) Roof

    I’m planning to a have a new home built in the mountains of Colorado (Elevation: 9000+ ft, 40 psf snow load used for roof design) with a monoslope 3:12 pitch roof.   I’ve observed several other homes with similar roofs, and there appears to be 3 or 4 different approaches used for the structure support to cover a span of ~35 ft or greater: (1) Monoslope Trusses, (2) Tubular Steel (3) LVLs or I-Beams.    I’m sure there are pros and cons with each approach, including varying options for the type of insulation that is most suitable.     Does anyone have any experience to recommend which type of support design is best for a monoslope roof?    IF a monoslope truss system is used (which involves two cords spaced 2′ to 2’6″ apart), how can these be modeled in Envisioneer?

    On a similar topic, although I typically see traditional structured wood (e.g., 2″ x 12″) or I-Beams used for floor joists – I also have seen some homes use engineered floor joists or trusses that are 2 ft in height.    I can see the benefit of the extra space if running HVAC ductwork in-between floors, but are there any other key benefits or disadvantages?

    Any particular reason for having a raked ceiling?

    That’s a good enough reason!

    Here in Oz that would be marginally more expensive than a standard half-truss.

    I’ve been using Envisioneer since v2.5 (previously used Cadsoft APDesign since 1990)

    Unfortunately the Truss Run tool still can’t generate standard trusses accurately -just look at the position of the nodes along the bottom chord. I’ve never seen a truss like that here in Australia.

    Can I suggest you try inserting the ceiling on the rake, then insert the roof 2′ above it. Use the Truss Run tool with zero setbacks . . . .

    Hope you’re luckier than I’ve been in using this tool
